There's a subscription fee they don't post January 6, 2009 While the product works well they don't tell you it costs 100 dollars a year in addition to the 50.00 advertised price for the hardware itself.
Bought it as a gift... ended up buying one for myself! January 1, 2009 This thing was MADE for IM freaks. When you take the device out of the box, you first notice the strong construction and heavy weight. It's not a toy nor is it built like one.
When you turn it on, the keyboard lights up -- very nice feature. After you setup the wireless access (using the same password you use for your wifi setup at home) the device will update itself (which takes about 10 minutes). Nice. I was afraid I would have to update it manually and was worried about the fact that it might be "outdated". Not so.
The device is 'smart' and it will lower its brightness automatically to conserve power. You can alternatively just close it, and it will put your messenger status on "AWAY" mode.
Setting up my AIM, MSN, and YAHOO accounts was very easy btw.
You can also store pictures (but not video) and access hundreds of XM-like Net radio stations (commercial free).
This thing really comes in handy when I visit a friend's house. My business requires that I be connected and I'm frequently chatting with my staff via MS messenger. This little device gives me a lot more freedom -- and it's a hell of a lot more practical than a Blackberry or a cell phone... no per message fees, no wireless fees.
ANY adult or kid will appreciate this as a gift. It's too cool. Make sure you get the color version. It should be under 50 bucks easily.
the kids love it! December 10, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
i bought 2 for these kids (ages 8 & 9)and they absolutely love it. works great, i have total control who they text and IM. i love the fact that it only works i internet hotspots and not everywhere so they are not on it all day and all night.i also love the music player. i loaded 200 songs on the SD card and it still has a lot of memory left. the kids love it and they no longer ask for cell phones and ipods.
Rip-Off November 20, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a rip-off! They charge you an extra $9.99 a month for IM... Something that is FREE! Now if they included wireless service that would be a great deal but they don't and you have to use your own Wi-Fi. Sure that includes text messaging, but thats what we all have cell phones for. I recently broke my Zipit, (more like a few months ago :-) and I have been thinking about getting another one, but now I see that it will be a waste of money since I have IM on my cell phone. My suggestion to you is if you have unlimited texting/IM on your cell phone, use that and dont get ripped off for something that is supposed to be FREE!!
a "real" review October 1, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought 2 of these last year for my daughters (ages 11 and 13). They work very well and we have had no problems. I signed up for a texting plan also but have since canceled it due to the fact that my kids now have cell phones and use those for texting. My kids do use these for instant messaging though...not as often as I would like considering that I paid the original price of $150 but they do use them. It's nice that they can take them any where in the house instead of having to be at the computer. The keyboard is good, as well as the backlight, display, and battery life (rechargable). I also purchased an sd card for each and they put their own music and pictures on them. We have not tried using them with wireless hotspots outside the house. Customer service has been good. I do wish the company would add some more features though as they originally seemed to have planned. But for what Amazon is now seelling them for $37??? I would definitely recommend it at that price. (also, there is a whole zipit community online that takes these apart and tinkers with them...if ur into that type of thing...interesting stuff.)
