5 out of 5 stars I'm surprised by this system   December 19, 2008

When I purchased this system, it was not for games. I was looking for an inexpensive system that could run virtual machines for testing and training purposes. I've run a few games on it (Lord of the Rings Battle for Middle Earth II and a few others) and it is amazingly fast with superb graphics - and that's without upgradint the graphics card.

The first thing I did was configure a triple boot system: Windows XP 32-bit, Vista 64-bit and Linux (running Ubuntu). I was able to acquire drivers for all of these systems, though I had to go to sources other than Acer, but that's not uncommon. I've purchased systems from Dell, Toshiba and HP in the last year, all of which I had to go to other sources to find XP drivers.

Now, here's what tops it off for me: the system had a from-factory problem with the drive bays. I received an unsolicited phone call from Acer telling me about it and that they are going to SEND SOMEONE TO MY HOUSE to fix the problem. Wow! This is like Dell-level support. If Acer keeps this up, they should continue to increase their sales.

The quad processor is lighting fast and the 8 Gigs of RAM comes in handy when running four concurrent operating systems through virtualization in the 64-bit operating encironment. I setup two of the hard drives as RAID0 and they perform about 56 percent better than the third single drive. This added performance is a big benefit for my virtualization, but since it is my Vista 64-bit boot drive, it's also really fast on boot up.

The water cooling system results in an amazingly quiet machine. I listen to classical music right next to it and even the subtle sounds of the music are not lost to computer fans and other noises.

It should be noted that the case has two key potential break points: the amazingly cool sliding face cover and the hard drive bay door. However, I was fortunate to read reviews about this fact online and I just treat them gently - so far, so good.

Overall, I have to rate this system - based on price to power ratios - as the best single system that I've every purchased (and this from a guy who's bought at least 30 systems as an individual and responsible for buying thousands for organizations).

[EDIT - ADDED JANUARY 2, 2009] You should know that the Predator defaults to booting from attached USB drives, if any drives are attached. I ran into this boot error that perplexed me for a few minutes until I realized that the system was trying to boot from the USB drive. No harm done, but it's good to know. You can change this in the BIOS.

5 out of 5 stars Predator Rocks, Acer Tech Support Sucks   December 7, 2008

This thing is awesome. WOW looks like a real movie instead of a game. Like it notes in the description, this thing has four cores and can play WOW, run media center on a TV, play music, and download in the background all at once. The cpu gadget (several to choose from) showed it never used above 33% of its power most of the time. The 64 bit system is very stable and I have had no trouble hooking up peripherals, even an HP printer!
A great buy and fantastic Christmas present!

The graphics card was loose when it was delivered and it would not boot, only beep. Tech support had no clue and told me to mail it to Texas at my expense for repairs. I opened the thing up (also cool), and the Nvidia 9800GTX card was loose, not to mention the cpu's minifan was not even plugged in. Should have just opened it up from the start. Tech support is not worth calling.
